Swapped it back and forth, car started with the old fob attached to the key, didnt with the new one attached. Eventually spotted a small part inside the old key fob a bit like a TicTac (but thinner). Swapped that to the new key fob and the car started. I'm 99% sure that the fob buttons didnt work until I'd swapped that part over too.
