If you are doing a main quest you cannot track a side quest. If the host has a side quest selected, you have to select the same quest in order to track it. You can't do (track) a side mission when you are halfway through a main mission. Finish that main quest and you'll be able to side quest to your hearts content. Thanks, that explains it.
If you want increased difficulty, don't upgrade your weapons or save weapons from lvl 15 and use them when you're level 30. I think the difficulty is about right.
